In case you have not yet heard, the NYC MTA voted to approve the proposed toll plan for the NYC Congestion Pricing program earlier today. The plan calls for charging trucks $24 or $36 (depending on size) every single time they enter the zone, while passenger vehicles will be charged only $15 once per day. They do provide discounts for overnight travel and certain bridge and tunnel crossings.

TANY released the following statement immediately after the vote:

“We are extremely disappointed by the MTA’s reckless decision to implement a congestion pricing policy that fails to prioritize essential cogs in New York City’s economic engine, including the trucking industry that moves nearly 90 percent of goods in the five boroughs. Make no mistake about it: this decision will have far-reaching impacts on New Yorkers everywhere, who will soon see increased prices for basic goods as motor carriers and the businesses they serve — including restaurants, bodegas, pharmacies, grocers, and everything in between – adjust to higher costs of doing business.

“It did not have to be this way. The MTA could have chosen to exempt the supply chain from its plan, attempted to find a middle ground by introducing pricing parity with passenger vehicles, or even implemented a once-a-day cap on charges to trucks – all options we have repeatedly presented to senior leadership. Instead, it has forged ahead despite the significant concerns of the industry, elected officials on both sides of the Hudson River, and regular residents across the region. Millions of people will pay higher prices for goods and services as a result.

“The trucking industry promises to continue fighting this policy and will explore all options, including litigation, to minimize the negative impact of this policy on New York City and its surrounding communities.”

The next step for TANY is to begin the litigation process and we will keep everyone updated. During this process we will also continue to seek legislative relief – asking that the legislature amend the enabling legislation to provide for pricing parity with passenger vehicles.

If you have tractor trailers in your fleet that travel through the State of Connecticut, this applies to you.

Beginning January 1, 2023, a new Highway Use Fee will be imposed on certain carriers for the privilege of operating, or causing to be operated, certain heavy, multi-unit motor vehicles on any highway (i.e., public road) in the state of Connecticut.

This will apply to tractor trailers (commercial combination vehicles) with a GVW of 26,000 lbs. and over. Straight trucks do not apply.

The Highway Use Fee is calculated based on a vehicle’s weight and number of miles driven in the state. The fee applies to calendar months beginning on or after January 1, 2023.

Carriers will be required to register with DRS for the Highway Use Fee by January 1, 2023. After registering, a Highway Use Fee Permit will be available in myconneCT (DRS’ online filing and paying portal). https://portal.ct.gov/DRS

TANY will be holding a free webinar on December 19th to discuss this in further detail and answer any questions you may have

Winter is right around the corner and we want to help you have a safe, trouble free season. Treat your Diesel Diesel fuel turns to gel when it gets cold, if it gels your truck won’t run! Best practices are […]

Winter is right around the corner and we want to help you have a safe, trouble free season.

Treat your Diesel

Diesel fuel turns to gel when it gets cold, if it gels your truck won’t run! Best practices are to use an anti-gel fuel additive once temperatures fall to 40 degrees and below. Always add the anti-gel before you fuel up, this way it properly mixes. Be sure to use the correct amount of additive to fuel ratio. Fuel purchased from HUB is pre-treated with anti-gel additive.

Watch out for Ice

The ice doesn’t have to be packed on the road to be dangerous, a thin sheet is all it takes to make driving hazardous. If there is no spray coming from the tires in front of you and the road looks wet there is likely black ice. A reflective road can be a destructive road!

Drain your air tanks

Daily draining of air tanks is a good preventative measure all year long, but when temperatures are at freezing or below it’s a must. If you do not drain your air tanks you risk ice forming in the lines. Always check for excessive oil when draining the air tanks as this may be a warning sign that should be reported to your maintenance facility.

Watch where you park

Avoid leaving trucks in flood prone areas where water and ice can form when bad weather is predicted. If this unexpectedly happens and water is above the lowest lug nut, do not start it! Additionally, avoid parking trucks where heavy snow and ice can fall on the top of trucks. The weight of the snow can cause the roof to cave in.

Check your wipers

Always check for operation of wipers & washer fluid. Ensure that the wipers remove solution without streaking. Do not use water in the washer fluid holding tank! Be sure to clear snow and ice off wipers before operating!

Keep your distance

Always leave extra room between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. Be careful of ice when driving over bridges and on entry/exit ramps.

New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYSDTF) has recently received multiple calls from carriers who have been contacted by fraudulent Service Bureaus.

The “service bureaus” are attempting to collect data and payments from HUT registrants. One of the email blasts which registrants are receiving includes the NYS logo and does not provide a disclaimer that they are a service bureau as opposed to a government entity.

NYSDTF is also receiving reports that in responding to these “service bureaus”, registrants are being asked to provide their taxpayer PIN to OSCAR. This is something that an approved Service Bureau should not be requesting.

NYSDTF is in the process of developing communication to be issued to all HUT taxpayers to make them aware of this fraudulent action. To ensure that they are reaching as many carriers as possible.
